What PetPlan Covers

One of the most important aspects of pet insurance is determining what the policy covers and what it does not cover.

Under the core PetPlan policy, you will receive coverage for the following:

• Veterinary exam fees
• Diagnostic treatments
• Prescription medications
• Surgery
• Cancer treatments
• Non-routine dental treatments
• Rehabilitation

What PetPlan Does NOT Cover

PetPlan does not cover pre-existing conditions, bilateral conditions, routine and wellness expenses, liability, or cosmetic and elective procedures.

PetPlan defines a pre-existing condition as “a medical condition which first occurred or showed clinical sign(s) before the effective date of this policy or which occurred or showed clinical sign(s) during the policy waiting period.”

They also make a distinction between curable vs. non-curable pre-existing conditions.

Benefit Limits

PetPlan offers coverage limits of $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000, and unlimited.

Deductibles

You can also choose a deductible of $250 to $1,000 with reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, and 90%. This can also influence your monthly premium payment.

Deductibles are a way to take some of the risk-off of the insurance company, so a higher deductible will result in a lower premium payment.

Non-emergency specialists are reimbursed at 80%, no matter what your overall reimbursement rate is.

Enrollment Requirements

Pets must be at least six weeks old to enroll in coverage. There is no upper age limit for coverage.

Your pet will receive coverage throughout the United States and Canada.

If your pet contracts an illness outside of the US or Canada, this will not be covered.

Waiting Periods

Like most pet insurance companies, PetPlan implements waiting periods before coverage kicks in.

Policyholders must wait the standard 15 days to receive coverage for accidents and illnesses and six months to receive coverage for cruciate and patella conditions.

The six-month waiting period can be waived if your pet is examined by a vet, and the vet notes that there is no indication of any knee problems.

PetPlan does have some specific fine print when it comes to receiving coverage.

You must take your pet to the vet within 48 hours of noticing symptoms of illness or injury. Otherwise, PetPlan may not cover veterinary costs.

Pets also must have annual checkups in order for coverage to apply. If they do not, PetPlan may withhold coverage until you take your pet in for a checkup.

Additional Coverages

Despite this, PetPlan offers some unique additional coverages on policies of $15,000 annual limits or more.

This includes:

• Cost of advertising and reward for lost or stolen pet
• Cost of boarding your pet at a kennel while you’re in the hospital as a result of accident, illness, or injury
• Reimbursement for the price of the pet if the pet dies or is euthanized during policy period due to injury or illness
• Reimbursement for travel costs that you cannot recover if you have to cancel a trip due to a pet’s illness or injury that shows up within 7 days of your departure date

Finally, PetPlan has a unique Covered for Life guarantee. This means that PetPlan will never terminate your coverage based on claims history or because your pet is sick.

Claims Process

PetPlan does not implement any lifetime or per condition claims limits.

This is good if your pet suffers from a chronic illness or injury.

They also reimburse veterinarians directly, which can prevent you from having to pay the full bill upfront.

Like many pet insurance companies, PetPlan has a certain time limit on when you must submit your claims.

You must submit claims within 90 days of treatment to receive reimbursement.

Claims payment may take up to 30 days but are typically paid within two weeks of submitting complete claims online or through the app.
