In 2002, PetPartners began providing pet insurance for American Kennel Club registrants through AKC Pet Insurance Plans. The company then expanded coverage in 2004 thanks to a partnership with the Cat Fanciers’ Association, enabling PetPartners to support coverage for CFA members.
Finally, in 2009, the company branched out further and began providing coverage for individual pet owners and groups including associations, businesses and credit unions.

PetPartners Insurance Plans
PetPartners offers two main base policy plans for cat and dog owners, as well as other add-ons and upgrades.
Customers can customize the base level plans by selecting the level of coverage they need and further tailoring the policy with available additional coverage options for wellness, inherited coverage, diabetes, and exam care. You can choose various annual deductible coverages under $500.
They also offer two types of limits: annual and incident limits. Make sure to read the fine print, understanding that if you chose the basic plan, you can end up with a small $500 per incident level, leaving the door wide open to a lot of out of pocket costs.
In this way, customers can pay for the coverage elements they need without overpaying for unnecessary coverage.
Accident Only Coverage
This base policy is for cats or dogs, and includes coverage for the following:
- Accidents
- Laboratory tests
- Surgery
- Hospitalization
- Pet medications
- Permanent teeth extraction
- Euthanasia
- X-rays
- Ultrasounds
- MRI and CAT scans
However, vet visits, treatments and other costs associated with illness or pet cancer is not covered.
Accident & Illness Coverage
This policy builds on the Accident Only coverage policy and also encompasses insurance for the treatments listed above.
In addition, treatment and other costs associated with illness or pet cancer are also included in this policy coverage.
Defender & DefenderPlus Preventative Coverage
PetPartners also includes policies to help dog and cat owners cover wellness and preventative care not covered within its Accident Only and Accident and Illness policies.
Customers can work with their veterinarian to select the preventative benefits that their pet will need.
This can include services like:
- Spay/neutering
- Teeth cleaning
- Rabies
- Flea/tick prevention
- Heartworm prevention
- Vaccinations
- Wellness exams
- Heartworm test or FELV screening
- Microchip services
- Urinalysis or ERD
- Deworming
- Blood or fecal parasite exams
Depending on the plan they choose, customers can save 37% through the Defender wellness policy, or 42% with DefenderPlus.
