Thanks to its distinctive duck mascot, Aflac is one of the most recognizable insurance providers in the country.
Founded in 1955, the stalwart provides accidental, dental, life, and vision coverage. They also offer one of the best short-term disability insurance policies on the market.
Aflac Disability Insurance Coverage Options
Aflac offers short-term group disability that covers both total and partial injury claims. Additionally, they provide personal accident and cancer insurance plans. Aflac’s short-term disability insurance is only sold through workplaces, so check with your employer to see if you are eligible to apply.
Each disability policy has guaranteed renewal up until the age of 75. Aflac even pays policyholders up to $1,000, every five consecutive years, for upholding their policy and rider. There are limitations to Aflac regarding the number of claims you can file at one time, and some exclusions for people with pre-existing conditions.
Short Term Disability Coverage
The policies are given on a short-term basis, so customers can easily select policy options that fit their financial situation. For instance, the total disability benefits periods can be 6, 12, 18, or 24 months long. Similarly, the elimination period can be as little as the same day, or as long as six months.
The monthly benefits vary based on the income of the policyholder. Payouts start at $500 and rise as high as $6,000. These cash benefits are paid directly to you the policyholder unless specified otherwise.
This straightforward approach ensures adequate financial resources are available when it comes to paying out medical bills or procuring funds for living expenses.
Aflac’s short-term disability insurance includes the ability to waive your premiums. Policyholders can forgo premiums on a month-to-month basis, provided they or their riders qualify as disabled. This benefit applies for the duration of the benefit period listed in the Policy Schedule.
Optional Riders
Aflac offers optional rider benefits, too, such as the $1,000 payout mentioned earlier. Another feature is the ability to purchase additional units of disability for benefit riders. The feature allows policyholders to bolster their existing coverage depending on their needs and changing living situations.
The policyholder can also get a disability benefit for on-the-job injury riders. The feature provides a payout to people who are disabled because of an injury they have sustained in the workplace.
The benefits can be offered in conjunction with Workers’ Compensation, though the terms are subject to conditions and maximum payout limits.
One of the aspects of Aflac’s short-term disability policy that makes it so appealing is how easy it is to purchase. Applicants do not have to endure a medical exam to qualify, and they can sign up for a plan online. Additionally, Aflac offers SmartClaim, which pays claims on the same day they are filed.
Like most other insurance providers, Aflac offers its short-term coverage for up to 24 months. Because Aflac does not provide long-term coverage, you would have to shop somewhere else if that is the specific type of policy you require. There is also a limit of two riders that you can put on each Aflac plan.

Ratings of Aflac
Aflac is more than its duck mascot and those catchy television commercials. It is one of the largest providers of insurance in the United States and another 50 million people worldwide.
One of the features Aflac has become synonymous with is its “guaranteed-issue,” which pays benefits to policyholders without any medical underwriting required.
As one of the most respected companies in the industry, Aflac scored well on the Consumers Advocate 2019 market analysis of disability insurance. Consumers Advocate rated Aflac as a 7.5 out of 10, which is “very good,” to use their exact words. This score placed Aflac fourth highest on the list of the top 10 disability insurance companies.
The scores account for four primary factors: policies and coverage, flexibility, financial strength, and reputation/customer experience.
Aflac’s financial strength and reputation or customer experience were its highest-rated aspects—each category earned perfect scores. The high mark is possible, thanks to Aflac’s robust financial strength and outstanding customer service.
The policies and coverage category earned a 9.0 out of 10 with their easy to get quotes and sign-up process. Aflac’s flexibility was its lowest-rated feature. While plans offer benefits, such as waived premiums and critical illness coverage, Aflac does not provide as many options as its competitors.
Aflac Disability Insurance Reviews Overall Customer Satisfaction
Aflac is known for its customer service and has been in Fortune Magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies for the last 17 years. The relatively high levels of customer satisfaction are evident in their NAIC complaint ratio. In 2017, Aflac received a complaint ratio of 0.21, which is below the national median of 1.00.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has held Aflac as an accredited intuition since 1958. Aflac earned a score of an A+, which is the highest possible grade from the BBB. There are also 62 customer reviews on the BBB website for Aflac with the average star rating being one out of five stars.
Consumer Affairs, another organization consumer use to evaluate businesses, has 884 total consumer reviews of Aflac. Of that total, 592 were submitted in the last year. Customer reviews average three stars out of five.
The Cost of Aflac Disability Insurance
While there is a limited range of short-term disability insurance options, the overall cost is variable.
The price will depend on whether the policy is for the self-employed or for employees, the type of work, and features, among other considerations.
You can check out Aflac’s disability insurance website if you want more information about a quote.
While prices can vary, here is an example of the payment in action. If you are hurt at work and cannot return for six weeks, Aflac will step in to assist you financially. In this case, Aflac would pay the policyholder $2,800.

Aflac Disability Insurance Financial Strength
A.M. Best
According to the latest reports, A.M. Best scored Aflac as an A+ across the board. An A+ is considered “superior” and is the second-highest rating possible. Therefore, customers using Aflac can be confident the company will meet its ongoing insurance obligations.
Moody’s
Aflac scored comparably high at Moody’s. They received an AAA or A3 rating, which is the highest quality possible with the lowest credit risk. This rating means Aflac is among the most reliable companies when it comes to repaying any short-term debt it might have accumulated.
Standard and Poor’s
Standard and Poor’s uses an 11-tier system when it comes to rating the financial strength of companies. Aflac earned an AA-, which is the second-highest score an organization can get. An AA “differs from the highest-rated obligations only to a small degree” and customers can expect “very strong” financial commitments.
Comdex
Comdex aggregates the scores of the major credit-rating agencies and provides consumers with a composite. Aflac scored 95 out of 100. This rating means that it is rated higher than 95 percent of other insurance agencies.
Aflac Disability Insurance Could Be For You!
With more than five decades of service under its belt, Aflac is one of the most trusted names in short-term disability insurance.
While its policy is made through businesses, Aflac provides some of the most competitive features on the market.
Currently, Aflac has issued more than 50 million insurance policies, which, combined with its financial strength, has helped establish itself as a household name.
