- AFBA sells term life insurance policies
Trying to find life insurance for high-risk occupations can be difficult. Most insurance companies on the market today will immediately deny applications from military members and first responders. Thankfully, AFBA specializes in providing life insurance for military, first responders, and government workers.
Keep reading to learn more about AFBA and the coverages it offers.
What is AFBA?
Founded in 1947, the Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA) was established to provide financial support for military members and their families.
Today, individuals who have high-risk jobs, like active-duty military and first responders, can have a difficult time finding life insurance. AFBA fills this need and has paid out over $1 billion in death benefits.
It is important to note that the 5Star Life Insurance Company underwrites AFBA’s policies. There are no war or terrorism exclusions written into an AFBA 5Star life insurance policy, making AFBA one of the best life insurance companies for military personnel.
If you have questions about your policy or an AFBA life insurance cancellation notice, you can call the AFBA Insurance phone number, 1-800-462-7441, or you can reach out to the company via an online email form.

Is AFBA highly rated?
You need to be able to trust your insurance company, and, thankfully, AFBA insurance ratings indicate that you can rely on AFBA to provide the protection your family needs. AFBA has an A- rating from A. M. Best, and the Better Business Bureau awarded AFBA an A+.
What life insurance products does AFBA offer?
AFBA has eight term life insurance products to offer you. These products include:
- Group Level Term Life Insurance
- AFBA Members Group Term Life Insurance
- First Protect Group Level Term Life Insurance
- Government/Municipal Employees Group Level Term Life Insurance
- DoD/Government Contractor Group Level Term Life Insurance
- Children’s Protect group level term insurance
- SmartStart Children’s Insurance
- State Sponsored Life Insurance
These policies all have their own selling points, so let’s examine each one so you can discover if an AFBA policy can meet your coverage needs.
Group Level Term Life Insurance
With the Group Level Term plan, you could have between $50,000 and $400,000 in coverage. Once your application for the policy is accepted, you will have coverage until your 70th birthday.
In addition, active duty military members won’t have to worry about failing to pay their AFBA life insurance rates because their payments can automatically be withdrawn from their paychecks.
Applicants who need $250,000 in coverage won’t need to take a medical exam if they are under 50 years old. Even better, if you only need $100,000 in coverage, you won’t have to take a medical exam until you turn 60. However, you must bear in mind that these policies are not guaranteed-issue policies.
AFBA Members Group Term Life Insurance
The Member Term policy is designed specifically for current and former:
- Federal employees
- State employees
- Municipal employees
- Local government
If you fall into any of those categories and are under 64 years old, you can purchase up to $500,000 in coverage. If you are married, your spouse is eligible to enroll in this plan as well. Applicants under the age of 56 will not need to take a medical exam if they only want to purchase $50,000 in coverage.
As long you make regular payments, your policy will protect you until you turn 70 years old. You can also add a children’s rider to this policy, which could protect any dependent youth under 21 years old.
First Protect Group Level Term Life Insurance
This AFBA first responder life insurance policy can provide great coverage to those who do a great amount of good for their community. The First Protect plan can be issued to applicants who are between 18 and 64, and coverage will last until they have turned 70.
AFBA advertises that applicants who don’t use tobacco products and are under 45 could pay as little as $17 per month for $100,000 in coverage. It is also exciting to note that if you are under 50, you could purchase up to $250,000 in coverage without having to take a medical exam. You will, however, be required to fill out a health questionnaire.
Government/Municipal Employees Group Level Term Life Insurance
This policy is meant to provide financial protection for government employees. As long as you are under 64 years old and are a United States citizen, you can apply for up to $500,000 in coverage. Like all AFBA’s life insurance policies, this plan has a generous no-medical-exam rule.
If you want to purchase $250,000 and are under 50, you will only have to answer a questionnaire about your health and won’t have to take a medical exam. While this doesn’t mean you will have guaranteed acceptance, this is much more convenient for most applicants.
If your application is approved, the policy will last until you turn 70 years old.
DoD/Government Contractor Group Level Term Life Insurance
Applicants who are DoD contractors and American citizens can apply for AFBA’s DoD/Government Contractor term policy as long as they are under 64 years old.
The coverage limit for this policy is $500,000, but if you only need $100,000 in coverage and are under 50 years old, you won’t be required to take a medical exam. Just like the First Protect plan, though, you will need to answer questions about your health.
If you purchase a DoD/Government Contractor policy from AFBA, you and your loved ones will be protected until you turn 70.
Children’s Protect Group Level Term Insurance
If you would like to provide your children or grandchildren with a life insurance policy, you can do just that with AFBA’s Children’s Protect term plan. You can purchase $50,000 in coverage for a child between the ages of 1 and 17, and the policy rates will remain level until the insured child turns 45.
SmartStart Children’s Insurance
Another policy available for children is the SmartStart plan, which is a great choice for parents who are on a budget, as you can purchase $10,000 in coverage with one payment of $150 or make a single payment of $225 for $15,000 in coverage.
When your child turns 25, they will have the choice of converting their policy into a whole life insurance policy that would multiply their coverage five times beyond its original value. For example, if you purchased the $10,000 term policy, your child would be able to increase his or her coverage to $50,000.
State Sponsored Life Insurance
If you’re a member of the Army and Air National Guard, the State Sponsored Life Insurance (SSLI) program was designed specifically for you. You could get up to $1,000 in coverage at absolutely no cost to you, or you could choose to purchase up to $25,000 for only $8.67 per month.
There are no military specialty, combat, or war exclusions written into these policies, so you can count on your insurance to provide for your loved ones.
What You Need to Know About AFBA
If you’re an active-duty servicemember, a first responder, or a government employee, you can purchase affordable and accessible life insurance through AFBA. Since most insurance companies refuse to provide life insurance to military members, AFBA meets this need with policies that have no war or combat exclusions.
These policies can help you protect your loved ones if you pass away unexpectedly and are well worth considering if you are having a hard time finding insurance due to your occupation.
