Though not mandatory like auto insurance, or as commonly purchased as life and homeowners insurance, pet insurance is a good way for dog and cat owners to protect their most important four-legged valuables.
Having a good veterinary health insurance policy for your animal also keeps you financially protected, potentially covering thousands of dollars in vet bills should your pet require expensive surgery and treatment.
Albeit a relatively new phenomenon in the United States, where the first policy was written in 1982 for the dog playing Lassie on television, pet insurance has grown into over a billion-dollar industry.
Check out this review for more information about one of the leaders in the pet insurance industry, Healthy Paws.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation was founded in 2009 by animal shelter director Steve Siadek and insurance executive Rob Jackson, who teamed up to help pet parents deal with the cost of veterinary treatments and to assist animal rescue organizations with caring for homeless pets.
In the decade since, the non-profit foundation has supported hundreds of pet rescues and animal shelters through its Every Quote Gives Hope medical grant program, while Healthy Paws’ pet insurance offerings have been consistently recognized as some of the best in the industry. Based in Bellevue, Washington, this national insurer provides plans underwritten by the Chubb Group, which has solid financial strength ratings.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Plans
Though Healthy Paws does not insure more obscure or exotic animals, the company does offer fairly comprehensive coverage for dogs and cats. Healthy Paws also has several plan options with no caps, allowing policyholders to choose from four annual deductible levels ($100, $250, $500, or $750) and four percentage options for vet bill payouts (60%, 70%, 80%, or 90%), all with no cap (per-incident, annual, or lifetime) on any of its claims. (For more information, read our “Best Pet Insurance for Exotic Pets“).
Additionally, once your annual deductible has been met, all policy-covered incidents will be paid during that year. This makes Healthy Paws superior to companies that reimburse after you reach each incident deductible.
Dog and Puppy Coverage
A Healthy Paws dog health insurance plan pays on your veterinary bill and covers new accidents and illnesses, though it does not include pre-existing conditions, examination fees, or preventative care, such as check-ups. Once covered, policyholders can visit any licensed veterinarian, including specialists and emergency animal hospitals. Healthy Paws even covers alternative care, as well. For newly enrolled dogs, there is a brief 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses and a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia.
Puppies are eligible for policy protection at just 8 weeks of age, and any dog enrolled before the age of 6 will have hip dysplasia coverage included at no extra cost. Though policies are likely to become more expensive the older a dog gets, dogs remain eligible for enrollment in a Healthy Paws plan up until their 14th birthday. Once enrolled, dogs will be covered for the lifetime of their policy.
Cat and Kitten Coverage
A Healthy Paws cat health insurance plan is nearly identical to its canine counterpart, providing coverage for accidents and illnesses, but not for pre-existing conditions, examination fees, or preventative care. The same 15-day waiting period for new accidents and illnesses and a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia applies after enrollment, with lifetime hip dysplasia coverage provided at no extra cost for felines enrolled before the age of 6. Cats must also be enrolled before they turn 14 years old, and once enrolled, will remain covered for the lifetime of their policy.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Quotes
To get a free instant online quote from Healthy Paws, potential policyholders should begin by going to the Healthy Paws website, typing the name of their pet into the top bar, indicating whether it is a dog or cat, and clicking “See My Rates.”
Users will then be prompted to fill out a form that includes more information about the pet, including gender, breed, and birth month and year. Applicants will also be asked to provide their home zip code and email address.
After entering this information, you will be shown an available plan based on your pet’s details, which will include a total monthly rate. At this stage, you can also see what it would cost to add another pet to your plan, or you can move forward with enrollment.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Discounts
Insurers often offer a variety of discounts to appeal to applicants. The practice is especially common in the case of companies that offer more than one type of insurance, and will provide extra savings to customers who bundle two or more types of coverage, such as home and auto.
Healthy Paws, however, only provides pet insurance, and its website lists just two types of available discounts. (For more information, read our “[CASE STUDY] Why I Bought Pet Insurance from Healthy Paws“).
Healthy Paws Financial Ratings and Customer Service
The area in which Healthy Paws truly shines is insurance reviews and customer feedback.
In fact, Healthy Paws was rated as the best overall pet insurance company in 2017, 2018, and 2019 by Consumer’s Advocate. The company has also earned a perfect five-star score from Trustpilot. The rating is based on 230 customer reviews, 97% of which are five-star “Excellent” ratings, and just 3% of which are “Bad” one-star reviews.
Additionally, Healthy Paws has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2011, and currently enjoys an A+ BBB Rating. The insurer has an average of four out of five stars when it comes to customer reviews, based on 85 reviews, and has closed 60 customer complaints in the last three years and 30 in the last 12 months.
